The Broch

Photogrammetry and laser scanning were used to create digital models of the broch itself, for enhanced analysis and visualisation.

Clachtoll Broch, located on the north-west coast of Assynt, is one of northern Scotland's most iconic archaeological monuments. The structure was destroyed by fire in antiquity causing the collapse of walls, internal wooden fixtures and the roof.

Now that the broch interior is clear of rubble, we can explore it both virtually and in real life for the first time in 2000 years.

Clachtoll broch was built on an uneven outcrop of bedrock, meaning that the interior of the building was much higher on the east side than on the west. In the lower area, the builders had constructed a curving passage with a flagstone floor.

At one side of the interior, following the curve of the wall and making use of a natural shelf in the bedrock, is an underground compartment interpreted as a souterrain, or storage space.
